This week is going to be hot I guess you can call it the dog days of summer. And wouldn’t you know it we loss power for 1 1/2 hours. For some reason when we lose power I call to report it and I am always the first one to report, so the power company tells me. I guess I am prepared I have the power company in my phone contacts. Anyway it is hot and looking at the 10—day forecast we are in the upper 90’s and 100 one day. Then add the heat index or what it actually feels like well, doggy day dog. Today’s Low 74F not bad but it quickly warmed up with a heat advisory for 11 am and the high was 95F. All this means is we all have to be smart with being outside. Me especially. I need to set my time and stick to it.
Enough about the weather. No rain happened so I didn’t need to respray the copper fungicide or BT, but I did forget to spray the Spinosad on the eggplant, which turned out to be a good thing. As I was watering the beans I saw I think an army worm or a bean worm. Anyway, tomorrow will be perfect to spray BT as it is light day because of volunteer genealogy document Tuesday.
Today I spent all my time transplanting my duplicates. Math is not my strong suit, and I miscounted. I planned for 10, but it ended up being 14.
It might not sound so bad, but 9 of them went in the back 40 and the holes were not prepared. That took loosening and weeding them. I did use my auger drill mix the amendments of some Black Kow, gypsum, my ground egg shell, Organic Expert 4-4-4 and cinnamon. I put a thin layer of leaves and straw around them to help protect from hot sun. I watered them in and will hope they make it. If not that is okay as I still have the originals I planted in Rudy’s Radish Ranch (RRR).
Finally, I was done and I need a little cool break. I start the truck and blast the air conditioning, eat a few healthy snack of my fruit and drink my hydration drink. Once I feel cool enough I have to water and harvest. I checked on my volunteer watermelon, which I think is seedless based on the color, but won’t know for sure until we cut it open.
Nope not ready yet. I harvested peppers—jalapenos and bell and of course okra. What I picked will be taken to the church tomorrow to be given away in the pantry drive thru. It is a good feeling to be able to give others fresh veggies.
It is a win-win I love growing and I can only use so much and the family to. Otherwise, it might sit in my refrigerator and then end up in my compost bin.
Not a bad Monday for a dog day.
