Ancestry® makes it super easy to add web links to anyone in your personal ancestry tree, whether it is public or a private.
In my blogs: Do Special Holidays/Celebrations and Ancestry Have Something in Common? and How To Make Rotten Banana Cake That is Oh… So Good!, I mentioned that capturing the memories of loved ones or having your loved ones tell their memories should be recorded with the different media on Ancestry.
As I was heading to my mom’s page to add the memories in my tree I landed on my father’s page.
It has been awhile since I looked at his page, but I saw the web links that I attached back in 2014 when he passed away.
After his funeral I made his remembrance YouTube video and my sister also made a YouTube playlist of all my mom and dad’s favorite songs in instrumental form as they’d been played for the funeral. Even now, the remembrance video and music are incredibly comforting, and the links on Ancestry gave me easy access.
The “web link” on Ancestry can be used for:
- YouTube or other websites that allow you to upload your own videos or voice recordings.
- Book links or a certain page in a book.
- Death Notice or obituaries like Legacy.
- Playlists of their favorite music.
- Other direct links like my own blog.
I was originally going to add the “Rotten Banana Cake” memory as a photo to my mom’s page, but after seeing my dad’s web links, I decided the easiest way to add the whole memory was to add my blog link directly to her page in my tree.
Super Easy Steps to Add The Web Link:
- After signing in to Ancestry® , go to the person you want to add the web link to.
- Open the person’s page completely so that you will see the web link. (See example below)
- Click “Add web link”.
- Fill in web address, which I copied and pasted.
- Fill in link name.
- How the finished web link looks and also how it will look on their page.
Some Things to Keep in Mind:
- Sometimes people take down the links or the web page changes, so your link that you made could break.
- When uploading media like YouTube, they first will decide if it could be public based on copyright laws.
- With YouTube, you also have options as far as who can view it and how it can be searched on YouTube.
I hope that I have taken the mystery out of web links and shown how easy it is to add them to your tree, and I also hope you try to add a web link of your loved one the next time you are working on your ancestry tree.
