FamilySearch Wiki: A Great Way to Boost Your Research

Have you ever searched for information where you need some help in how to find the records or maybe cross a language barrier?  Maybe you are new to genealogy and need some research resources to get started.  Whenever I am having research problems or need a resource, my number one place to go to find out more to help me crack my case is FamilySearch Research Wiki.

I found this website several years ago when I was having trouble with transcribing Latin parish records for my German lines.  FamilySearch Research Wiki is a great way to boost your research and might help you find your next clue; best of all, it is free!

Let’s take a closer look.

FamilySearch Research Wiki is Easy to Find:

There are three easy ways to find FamilySearch Research Wiki:

  • Do a Google search for FamilySearch Research Wiki
  • Go to FamilySearch.org and click the tab ‘Search’ and it is listed on the drop-down menu as ‘Research Wiki’.
  • Also in Familysearch.org. If you are logged in and browse by place, at the top of your search results will be a “guided Research For ____”.  (Note: As of this writing, they have recently changed the design of the page and when you click the back button – at least for me – it brings you back to the old web design of the page, which I like better).

Now that we know how to find FamilySearch Research Wiki, let’s take a closer look at the Menu.

The Wiki Menu:

On FamilySearch Research Wiki home page, you will want to get your bearings by first looking at the menu area.  There is so much information under each heading in the menu that my post would have to be a book in order for me to go over everything that the website has to offer.  Let’s explore three areas though that will hopefully help you with your genealogy mystery.

Menu Example 1: Research Resources
  • If you need research resources, for example an interactive generation pedigree chart form, follow these steps (It works for finding a bunch of other resources too):
    1. click on “Research Resources”.
    2. Scroll down until you see “Research Tool”
    3. Click “Genealogy Research Forms”.
    4. Scroll down until you see “Family groups, pedigrees, and research logs”.
    5. Click “Pedigree Chart Form”, which the description informs you is an Interactive PDF form that can be completed before printing.

As shown in the video, there are many research resources you can use.  Have fun exploring and please let me know in the comments what research resource on the wiki page you found most helpful.

Now let’s take a look at centers/libraries.

Menu Example 2:  Centers/Libraries
  • In this example, maybe you need to view a document that can only be viewed in person at a Family History Library, Family History Center or an Affiliate Library. In that case, you will want to explore the “Family History Centers”.  This link will bring you to a world map so you can locate the closest place for you to view the document based on your information entered.
  • If the document can only be viewed at the designated places and/or the place is too far away or some other issue, FamilySearch has you covered.  If you would like to know how to submit a library lookup, please click this link: FHL Lookup | Nancy Dru Genealogy
Menu Example 3:  Online Genealogy Records
  • You can start your search with the broad Wiki search by using the menu link.   You may need to keep digging deeper in your particular subject area if you want something more specific.
  • Sometimes, with all the digging, you can get too much information and can easily get sidetracked from what you were originally looking for.
  • If you know what you are looking for, I suggest using the direct search box by place or topic.
